A podcast/talkshow setup is all about capturing conversations in a way that feels natural, clear, and engaging. They tend to rely on clean, consistent audio that can be edited together easily with a visual element being popularised, using more than one camera helps create variety in the visuals, letting editors cut between wide group shots, close-ups on individual speakers, and reaction shots that keep the discussion dynamic. With the right lighting, microphones, and recorders, the podcast environment can feel both professional and welcoming, giving the audience a polished end product that still retains the intimacy of a real conversation.

GETTING SET UP

Cameras

  • Mount the GH7 and GH5s on the Manfrotto Large and Medium Video Tripods.

    • Option 1: Two close-up shots (host and guest).

    • Option 2: One wide shot of the set + one close-up of the guest.

  • For a 3-camera setup, add the GH4 on a Manfrotto Small Video Tripod.

    • This allows a standard wide + two close-ups (host and presenter).

Microphones

The Tascam DR-70D is recommended for this setup. All microphones below are intended to plug into it (though they can also connect directly to the GH7 XLR mount to record in-camera).

  • Sennheiser Wireless Lavalier + Wired Lavalier to Minijack → discreet look.

  • Dynamic Stick Mic + Sennheiser Wireless Lavalier → stick mic can be handheld or mounted on a mini tripod (ask the Student Assistant).

  • Tascam OR Zoom H2Next Sound Recorders → for close-proximity recording.

    • These have internal recording functionality and would not be plugged into the DR-70D.

Lighting

  • Either the Ikan Milo 3-Light Set or the Godox SL60W 2-Light Set will work.

    • Ikan Milo: adjustable output, including warmer tones.

    • Godox SL60W: fixed 5600K white light.

  • A reflector is strongly recommended, especially with the Godox, to soften and control the more powerful beams by bouncing light off a surface.

  • For a touch of modernity, consider adding the Aputure RGBWW Camera Light on blue or green to provide a subtle colour fill.

Extras

  • M4/3 Prime Lens Kit
    7.5mm for the wide shot.
    25mm or 45mm for close-ups → more cinematic look.

  • Feelworld On-Camera Monitor
Best used on the wide shot for framing and focus clarity.

  • Blue Yeti Pro USB Mic
    Great as a prop!

  • Cables
Ensure you have all necessary cables for seamless connectivity.

  • Health & Safety
Sandbag your setup and gaffer cables securely to prevent accidents.

  • Foldable Trolley
Extremely useful for transporting equipment efficiently.

Facilities

Whenever possible, it’s always preferable to shoot in a controlled environment. Our Mediazone TV Production Studio is ideal, offering:

  • A choice of black, white, or green screen backgrounds.

  • Flexible setup options, including table & chairs, director’s chairs, or sofa seating.

If you plan to bypass video recording altogether, our Radio Production Studio is fully equipped for audio-only projects. It provides everything you need to record a high-quality podcast, talk show, or radio show, with capacity for a host and up to two guests.
