Avid! Now on your phone

Avid, one of the leading companies in the video and audio editing field has announced its new product. For the first time Avid brought out software that is competitive with Apple software’s on iDevices. Avid’s new Avid Studio for iPad is the main competitor of Apples iMovie for iDevices. Avid Studio App is very similar to Apples iMovie App, but it’s more advanced. IMovie app is shaved down, and it offers only basic editing, unlike Avid Studio App which is more complex and closer to its big brother Avid Media Composer (which we offer here in Mediazone) for Mac and PC. Avid doesn’t recommend using Avid Studio for iOS on the first version of iPad because it’s not powerful enough to work flawlessly with Avid Studio. Avid Studio for iOS is compatible with iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, and available in the App Store for $4.99.

Just imagine 10-20 years ago you needed huge machines to shoot good quality videos and edit them, and only big companies could afford to buy the equipment. When now all you need is a small mobile device, which allows you to shoot HD video, and edit it on the spot. You don’t have to have a big crew and a van full of equipment to achieve your goal.

Intercollege Limassol Communications students get the Mediazone Grand Tour!

On Thursday March the 8th we had the pleasure of hosting Dr Anna Farmaki’s Advertising class as well as Mr. Tsagalas’s communication students from Intercollege Limassol. They made the trip out to the University of Nicosia to visit Mediazone, get the “grand tour” and receive a brief multimedia presentation on the “Evolution of advertising – the move into the online domain” from myself. That was followed by a “quiz / game show” where students got a chance to show what they learned. The students also got a chance to work with all of the Mediazone team and Lab Assistants to get a glimpse into what some of the roles were in a “live to tape” studio control room – via a small workshop. Mediazone hosts High School Career Week!

The  tradition continues as many of the Lyceums sent students out last week to real world employers for an experience that combines both a working and teaching environment. Mediazone was asked specifically if they could host Marianna Papamichael Grade: B’8, School:  Archbishop Makariou C-Dasoupolis for the week. Of course it was our pleasure. It was great having Marianna in Mediazone, who followed a schedule that allowed her to spend time with all employees of Mediazone, giving her a taste of the administrative, creative, technical and service oriented aspects of what Mediazone does, both for the University and for students. Marianna had a very positive attitude and was enthusiastic. She was willing to learn and try new things. She displayed interest and abundant energy  in the various tasks she undertook. Mediazone Handbook Updates – Have landed!

With the Spring Semester under way – Mediazone has updated the Handbooks for all of our major sections. You will find useful step by step information on the major lending equipment as well as tutorials for using Avid & Wavelab. Many new details have been added with plenty of screen shots. Also by the middle of next week – “Quick reference guides” will be found in the bags of all the Sony pd-170cameras and the Tascam recorders for student convenience. These Handbooks are  your best resource when using equipment & facilities in Mediazone. Remember – its up to you to dive in and grab hold of the tools that we provide for you!

“Stop! Cut! – Give me the camera – I mean the phone – I have to take this call!”

Well – this wouldn’t actually happen because you would have taken the sim card out of your iphone 4 when shooting a film.

Director Park Chan-wook (shown above) can tell you all about that as he has completed his 30 minute film by shooting it entirely on an iphone 4. He still followed all of the classic film production steps, used the same professional equipment and lenses, all except for the camera. Continue reading →
