Due to the imminent Christmas break I have decided to write an article about Christmas celebrations but using a different approach this time.
What is the first thing that comes to one’s mind when thinking about Christmas? Let me answer to that. Clothes, shoes, x-box, i-phones, playstation, discounts and generally stuff that someone should spent a lot in order to have them, which of course are considered as luxuries.
Is that what is Christmas all about??? Buying staff we don’t need in order to impress???
I’m afraid consumerism changed our reality and made us act like someone else that we are not.
You see for some people Christmas are something sacred. A few years ago you just waited anxiously for Christmas to come in order to gather with your family and relatives around a table without even considering what your present under the Christmas tree was. A few years ago you were happy to see your uncle dressed as a Santa so that you could sit on his knees for a warm hug and to say thank you for the (not so great) gift he has given to you.
Not anymore.
When you go for a stroll around town you can see a young girl around that literally begs her parents to buy a brand new pair of shoes which will approximately cost 100 euro or more and eventually feel miserable if that doesn’t happen. Right next to her you can see a middle-aged man playing the guitar in order to buy milk or bread from the coins that he will collect from people that pass by.
Really this bombardment of commercials all these years changed who we truly are and turned us to people that need to over consume.
There are people around us suffering and all we do is to feel sorry that we couldn’t find a jacket that suits us or shoes that were not good enough.
Humanity goes through a constant crisis but it’s up to us to change who we are and bring a change to the world.
People should change and start caring for their fellow people again.
Love cannot be exchanged with any amount of money.
Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year!
