Helping Around in TEDx University of Nicosia 2019

Posted On December 6, 2019 By admin In Studio Assistants Blog /  3

I am a first year student at the University of Nicosia and I am studying Digital Communication and Mass Media. This gave the opportunity to become a volunteer at Mediazone which is such an amazing experience that I knew I would only have once in my life.

Until now, several things, that I thought they would be hard to accomplish, showed up. Although, they actually gave me the opportunity to work even harder and learn through those. Even though I am a volunteer, I still want to do as much as I can and to work on different things. Thus, when the time for TEDX University of Nicosia 2019 came, I couldn’t believe it. But at the same time, I asked myself “How can I do this?”.

At this event, I was handling graphics which was a fairly easy task: you press a button and lower thirds appear on the bottom and on left side of the screen. However, I came prepared for anything. When event time came, I needed to wake up early and to work all day but it was definitely worth it.

Even though I haven’t been in Mediazone for a long time, TEDX University of Nicosia was one of my favorite events that I have ever been to.

Being able to listen to all these speakers talking about their lives, their stories, their trials, their tribulations and about what the future holds us, was so astonishing. That made me think of my personal stories in life, my dreams and hopes and it broadened my horizons.

I was also able to do several things except from graphics: I helped anyone who needed some assistance and I loaded part of the equipment. I also helped out putting gaffer tape which was tiring but when I took them off at the end of the event day, I actually felt a lot of satisfaction.

I also learned how to properly wrap an XLR cable!!!

Finally, I wrote a lot of notes in order to deliver my position. All these may not seem a lot to do but they actually made me feel very happy because I learned a lot: I was able to notice everyone’s roles and to understand how important they are in order to lead to a successful event.

It was also such an amazing experience because it gave me an idea of how my job will be in the future. Since I am studying Digital Communication and Mass Media, I like television broadcast. This experience showed me how much work is required, how alert I have to be and always concentrate on what needs to be done in order to succeed at this job.

This was definitely one of the best experiences I have ever had. I really liked working on graphics, watching a live event and watching how it was all organized. In fact, I tackled a lot of new things in a very new situation for me. That was one of the many worthy things I gained from TEDx University of Nicosia 2019 and it was also fun for me as a volunteer to be in a big event like this one!
