It’s a click of a button and viola a photo is born, kind of! Photography has become so very easily accessible to all of us but yet has lost its true notion of documentation of either real life events, a moment in time or a fabrication of our imagination. The photography classes at University of Nicosia are designed through the enthusiasm of its instructors to release the passion of true photography again, through the difficulties of capturing the perfect light or the greatest expression through a class mates face this class really focuses on getting students to reconnect with what photography really is all about.
I would be lying if I didn’t say that all the students within the first few weeks feel like fish out of water, cause lets face it F/stops and Shutter speeds are a foreign language when you have been only taking photos with your smart phone. After this hurdle of technical mumbo jumbo is instilled in the brain of every student, the creative side of each and every student is released and this makes for a very interesting blend of studio chaos ! The upside of working in a large studio space with many students at the same time is that they can all benefit from what each other is doing, sharing ideas and thoughts and developing better concepts for their work. Exceptional work in photography comes from students who really strive and search to better their images and ideas. This past semester gave me the opportunity to meet an incredible young man with a real enthusiasm for the printed photograph and not only the digital aspect of it.
Kyriacos Papachristodoulou is a young man with a great deal of energy and respect for photography and through his images posted here on this blog you will see his capabilities to work both within more refined details and abstract notes. His work explores his ideas and his visualization of how things should be represented through his own eyes. Photography 1 at University of Nicosia may say it’s about “learning the basics “ but the basic is where the advance begin.
