Recently I have engaged in Crowd funding a number of projects on various crowd funding websites. It is a phenomenon that seems to have caught on in the recent worldwide economic climate. It is a bit like engaging in low risk investment for start ups on a tiny scale. Its basically getting the whole wide world to contribute a little bit of money to get a project off the ground. This has caught on like wildfire!
More info about crowd funding see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crowdfunding.
In the area of film making it has turned out to be an incredible tool. For indie film-makers it is truly a blessing. Film students are also taking advantage!
There have been a number of films, large scale like the Veronica Mars movie which raised over 5 million to the indie film The Flower Shop which just surpassed its goal of 16000 by 69 dollars at the time of writing this.
I supported the latter, which by the way is still open for another 8 days.
So to conclude. STUDENTS & ALUMNI!! you have an idea, you have a film you want funded. Get yourself organized ahead of time. Raise some money – make your film. It is actually that simple!
