Connect Allen & Heath XB-14 with CANFORD illuminated sign ES base fitting

Posted On May 23, 2016 By admin In Engineering /

Find below instructions on how to connect the Allen & Heath XB-14 radio mixer with CANFORD illuminated sign ES base fitting (type B, 230 volt). This connection will light the ON AIR light whenever a MIX fader is ON and fade UP.

Make sure the installation is made by an electrician.
Follow the steps below at your own risk as Mediazone, University of Nicosia takes no responsibility as to the choices you make that may have any negative impact in any way.

The base of Canford Type B units has a PCB that includes a semi-conductor called a triac – that acts like a mechanical relay – and this triac performs the final mains switching to the fitted lamps within the same Canford Type B unit.

On the control input side the Canford Type B has PCB screw terminals marked:

  1. ON
  2. 0V
  3. FLASH

So, connecting common 0V to ON makes the lamps come on permanently.

And connecting common 0V to FLASH makes the lamps come on, in a flashing state.

So to summarise, all we need is a simple voltage free contact closure to make the lamps come on (either flashing or steady).

Connection Diagram:

For the connection of the 2 units i used a CAT5 cable. On XB-14 Remote A, connect the D-sub pin 1 (MIC 1), 2 (MIC 3), 9 (MIC 2), 10 (MIC 4) to ON and pin 8 (Ground) to 0V.

Now you will be able to operate the ON AIR light by fading up any of the MIC faders.
