Olympic Games In London 2012

Posted On May 4, 2012 By admin In Studio Assistants Blog /

The summer of 2012 is approaching and the United Kingdom is getting ready to host the XXX (30th) Summer Olympic Games in London.

London was selected as the host city on the 6th of July of 2005 with 54 votes overcoming Paris (France) which collected 50 and since then preparations have been underway. The fact that London is hosting the 30th Olympiad is a great opportunity for the UK organizing committee and citizens to prove that they have the skills of organizing an event as big as the Olympic Games. Moreover it is a chance for them to show to the rest of the World their sense of hospitality. The opening ceremony will take place on the 27th of July while the closing ceremony on the 12th of August.

Some interesting facts about the upcoming Olympiad are:

  • There will be 165 qualified nations participating
  • The number of athletes participating will reach the number of 10,500
  • There will be 302 events held in 26 sports
  • The main track & field events will be held in the Olympic Stadium(London)

Last but not least it is worth mentioning that Cyprus will be represented by 6 athletes that will try their best and fight for an Olympic medal.

The athletes are:

Andonis Anderou,Panayiota Andreou, George Achilleos  – Shooting

Kyriacos Ioannou   – High Jump

Andreas Kariolou,Pavlos Kontides  – Sailing

The fact that Cyprus is represented by only 6 athletes is of course disappointing. To improve this situation though I believe that the Cyprus Sport Organization should give more motivation to the athletes in order to increase the number of participants, not only in the Olympics but in all athletic events, and for better results to come. All in all, even though the number of Cypriot participants is small we will pray for them to perform well.

So get ready to live the thrill of the Olympic Games during the summer of 2012 and let’s hope that the Cypriot athletes will manage to collect a medal for our country.
