What is Kinetic Typography?

Have you ever watched a whole music video consisting of letters? Literally only words flying around the screen, but made in a such way that it’s actually very cool?

Well this kind of motion graphics is called “kinetic typography”. I got very inspired by this kind of art lately and that’s why I would like to share some helpful information with you.

Kinetic Typography literally means “moving text” and this is what the style is all about. Examples for animated text dated since 1899. Although during that period this style was not widely used, because for example the opening sequences of the movies were made from static text and nothing else. In the late 1960’s it became popular because more and more editors start using animated text for the opening scenes of movies. Since then the kinetic typography became irreplaceable part of the film industry. There are even a whole studios dealing only with the creation of titles and animated text of future films.

Nowadays kinetic typography is used in many more areas. One of the most common and most beneficial is the advertisement industry. More and more companies start looking for ways to promote their products on TV channels or in internet. For this purpose “moving typography” is the perfect solution. It is entertaining and can be created for people of different ages. You can easily add basic animation features and make it look even better. Nevertheless the most common reason why it is so widely used in the advertising industry, is because it provides one with a high profit for a low cost. Lower than the cost that you will need to pay for the making of 1 minute video clip lets say with actors, directors etc.
Another field in which this kind of typography is used is the music industry, and more specifically in  music videos. I’ve been watching a lot of great kinetic typography videos lately. Most of them were from  hip-hop songs. I believe that in hip-hop, the lyrics and the speed are more explosive and the effect of the animation is better. The reason why they make the music videos in this way is the same that I mentioned above. It is a lot cheaper and you can have incredible results.  Kinetic typography is used in many more areas. It is an easy and creative way to make something effective.

I put some links to kinetic typography videos for you to get the idea of what was I talking about until now. Enjoy!
