Recent figures on pay structure for below the line film production salaries!
Most of us that work in the media and in film have aspirations, and even lofty goals; and so we should. Casey Kasem, an iconic radio personality, who recently died this summer, used to close with “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars”. Most of us do just that. We are the creative types, the bread and butter behind every production, the push and the pull, the muscle and the operators. It is usually pretty easy to forget these individuals as their name goes racing by in the multitude of names at the end credits of a film. In Cyprus, we need these people more than ever!As a young and budding industry, for me these people are heroes in their own right. Institutions of Film culture advancement and promotion exist and are growing, including: Cyprus Film Days film festival, International short film festival of Cyprus among others. The value of film-makers is growing as audiences have more of a reason to escape to different realities.
Media as a vast term includes countless of products but is often underestimated. Although it moves information around, it entertains us, it makes us stand up and take notice, it makes us laugh and cry, it delivers messages, it gives and takes power, it makes us buy and sell, it makes us more social, and impacts us all daily we forget that it is time consuming, painstaking work, detail oriented, highly specialized and meticulous. It is just plain hard work.
When thinking about a career in media and film, the most common question is” how much would I get paid?”. Well in the U.S, where the film industry has been around since forever, its a decent wage. In Europe and even in Bollywood rates are climbing despite worldwide economic issues. No matter what the dream is, do not give up, against all odds! Of course good pay never hurts!
For many this could be the inspiration they have been looking for; for others it just wouldn’t make a difference, and if you asked them “so why do you do it?”, the plain simple truth is because we love it, because it is a passion and because there is quite nothing like it in the world!
