Cyprus Film Days 2013 hits the big screens of Rialto Theatre and Zena Palace Cinema in its 11th edition, from the 19 – 28 April 2013, and celebrates cinema, presenting outstanding cinematic gems. This year’s exciting programme will showcase international and local productions, special tributes and music events. University of Nicosia students will participate in the newly established Student Jury. Students will experience the difficult process of film judging as they have to choose the best among the nine films of the Glocal Images section.
This year’s Viewfinder Programme includes films such as Beasts Of The Southern Wild, a film which will excite audiences; delivering a universal story with the use of excellent cinematographic art, Beasts is the debut film of director Benh Zeitlin. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards in 2013, and won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2012 as well as the Golden Camera at Cannes Film Festival the same year. The Hunt, by Danish director Thomas Vinterberg (co-founder of Dogma 95 with Lars Von Trier), starring Willem Dafoe, portrays the breathtaking story of a man searching for the mythical tiger of Tazmania. Balancing between blunt realism and inventive
storytelling, Kim Nguyen, sent his cinematographic debut War Witch in this year’s Academy Awards, as it was nominated for Best Foreign Film 2013.
This year’s Glocal Images Competition Section includes the screening of the Cypriot film Block 12, by Kyriacos Tofarides, a film that delivers a unique viewpoint on the issue of the natural resources of Cyprus.
Don’t Miss the midnight screenings of Cult Revenge films such as the film Fair Game, one of Tarantino’s many inspirations for his film Death Proof; witness Punk Rock music’s meeting with the Big Screen, and explore the work of Chinese Director Wen Jiang; revisit the work of Harris Savides, the Cypriot Born cinematographer of films such as Gus Van Sant’s Elephant
